Weather on the Palmer Divide

Castle Rock sits well over 6,000 feet up, on the high ground between Denver and Colorado Springs. Storms that build over the mountains often intensify as they cross it, which is why the town sees so much hail, and why it tends to get heavier snow than the metro to the north.

Altitude is hard on shingles in quieter ways too. The sun is stronger up here, and big swings between day and night temperatures make roofing materials expand and contract harder than they would at lower elevation. Both shorten a roof’s life, and both are good reasons to choose the shingle carefully.

Are Impact-Resistant Shingles Worth It Here?

Impact-resistant shingles carry a Class 4 rating, the highest in the standard impact test. They are not hail-proof, and a big enough stone will still damage them. But they hold up to the ordinary hailstorm far better than a standard shingle, which on the Palmer Divide can mean one roof instead of two over the same stretch of years.

They cost more than a standard shingle. Some insurers offer a premium discount for them, so ask your carrier before you decide. We will price both options side by side so the choice is yours.
